As Delhiites continue their battle against deteriorating air quality, the capital is facing another health crisis- a sharp spike in the cases of influenza B and H1N1, commonly known as swine flu. The spread of flu is in the health news today and hospitals across the city are witnessing an influx of patients exhibiting symptoms, such as persistent cough, high fever, respiratory issues, and fatigue, which raised alarms among healthcare professionals.

The Intersection of Air Pollution and Viral Infections

So, Delhi’s infamous air pollution is once again in the spotlight as experts link the rising flu cases to environmental factors. As per the reports, the city’s air quality index (AQI) stood at 249 on Wednesday morning, categorizing it as ‘poor.’ According to medical professionals, the interplay between fluctuating temperatures and heavy pollution has created a breeding ground for viruses, which is further exacerbating the spread of respiratory illness.

Doctors also suggest that pollutants in the air weaken the immune system while making individuals more susceptible to viral infections. Besides, as people move away from winter clothing due to changing weather patterns their vulnerability to infection also increases, while accelerating the transmission of the virus.

Public Health Concerns and Symptoms Overlap

A recent survey conducted by LocalCircles indicates that over half of Delhi households (54%) have reported symptoms resembling swine flu, including fever, sore throat, headaches, and joint pain. The overlap of these symptoms with those of COVID-19 has left many residents in a state of anxiety, unsure about the nature of their illness.

Medical practitioners have affirmed that the symptoms have been persistent and lasted for several weeks. In severe cases, patients are experiencing complications, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinus infections, which has led to an uptick in hospital admissions.

Delhi’s Hospitals Under Pressure

With the spike in flu cases, hospitals in the capital are witnessing an increased demand for medical care. Dr. Rommel Tickoo, Director of Internal Medicine at Max Super Speciality Hospital, stated that a wide spectrum of viruses, including Influenza A, B, H1N1, and H3N2 are circulating simultaneously, which makes diagnosis and treatment challenging.

Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, emphasized that the severity of symptoms has been concerning, with many younger individuals, particularly those between 35 and 40, and this called for the need for hospitalization. He further explained that: “Unlike seasonal flu, this strain is leading to prolonged illness and more serious respiratory complications.”

Precautionary Measures Recommended by Experts

Given the alarming rise in cases, healthcare professionals are urging residents to take precautionary measures to curb the spread of the flu. Doctors strongly recommend annual flu vaccinations as a preventive measure. In addition, they have also started that wearing masks, maintaining good hygiene and frequent hand sanitization can also help reduce the risk of infection. Also, those who experience persistent respiratory distress are advised to seek medical attention immediately.
