EcoVadis is a collective web-based rating framework for analysing organizations' non-financial worldwide performance, to increase insight into the sustainability performance of their suppliers.

EcoVadis' non-financial assessment assesses a company's sustainability management system using 21 standards for sustainability centred on four major achievement areas:

  • Environment: Impact of production processes (energy consumption, water, biodiversity, local and unintentional pollution, GHG emissions), effect of product use, and end-of-life.
  • Labour Human Rights: Human resource management (accident prevention, staff training, working conditions, social dialogue) and human rights (respect for labour rules, diversity, and discrimination)
  • Ethics: Corruption, which is anti-competitive activities, as well as data management accountability
  • Sustainable Procurement: Supplier environmental and social activities that contribute to sustainable procurement.

Ecovadis Principles

The evaluation is driven by seven EcoVadis fundamental principles:

  • Evidence-Based: The graded company must produce evidence and supporting papers and is liable for them (strategic notes, certificates, reports).
  • Industry, Location Matter: The assessment considers specific issues relating to the sector, presence in risky nations, size, and geographic extent.
  • Diversification of Sources: The rating considers viewpoints expressed by NGOs, trade unions, international organizations, local governments, or other third-party organizations (e.g., auditors, CDP, external compliance database).
  • Technology is Essential: The EcoVadis IT system integrates learning, growth, rapid scalability, and supports industrialization.
  • Assessment by International Sustainability Specialists: The documents are reviewed by an international team of specialists who are up to date on the latest best practices in sustainability.
  • Traceability and Transparency: The documents are securely preserved and can be tracked back. Rated companies get access to the most extensive results as well as each rating decision.
  • Excellence Continuous Improvement: EcoVadis has created and is running a company-wide quality management system that is supported by a client advisory board and a scientific committee.

The Importance of Ecovadis

The use of technology is an important aspect of the EcoVadis assessment: the collaborative, comprehensive web-based platform monitors the sustainability performance of suppliers with reports and dynamic quantitative measures.

The simple scorecards provide a clear, dynamic view of a company's performance for each of the four sustainability categories (Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement): insufficient, beginner, intermediate, advanced, and leader. This data aids in the implementation of prioritised activities for improvement.

Improvement opportunities are instantly put into the company's Corrective Action Plan, which is prioritised.

The Corrective Action Plan (CAP) is a tool used to improve the CSR performance of the evaluated organization and its client.

When the supplier's score is less than 47, it is strongly advised to select the 5-10 most significant actions suggested by the program.

Uploading additional documents does no effect on the current scorecard, but will be taken into account for the next re-evaluation.
